Beverly Villa is in Kowloon Tong, and this interior design concerns a single room of about 70 sq ft belonging to a six-year-old, handled in a minimalist style. With little floor area to work with, we brought the bed, desk and shelving together on one wall, so that a single corner serves for sleeping, homework and keeping favourite things. The images below are design renderings.
Headboard desk and shelving
The headboard wall is finished in timber veneer. Cabinets run up to the ceiling at the top; open shelves below hold books and storage boxes; and a floating desk sits right beside the bed with clear legroom beneath. A grey upholstered panel softens the headboard for reading in bed. Timber drawers under and beside the bed take clothes and toys, and a window ledge dressed with curtains and sheers completes the wall.
Bookshelf, wardrobe and study
At the foot of the bed, a white open bookshelf runs from floor to ceiling, holding books and boxes within the child’s reach. Beside the door, a white wardrobe sits above a set of timber drawers. White on one side and warm timber on the other keep the narrow room from feeling crowded. A separate study has a two-step cushioned platform by the window and a long run of shelves for books and toys beneath white wall cabinets: a corner for sitting down with a book.
A small room need not be a compromise. With its functions gathered on one wall, and timber and white used in turn, the rest of the floor is left free for the child to play.
