Novum East, Flat N, sits at 856 King’s Road in Quarry Bay, with a saleable area of around 216 sq ft. CLAY Interior designed this compact flat in a Japanese-modern style, blending Japanese minimalism with contemporary function, and using timber and soft tones to create a calm, comfortable home.
Raised timber platform
Given the small floor area, a raised timber platform combines the sleeping area with storage. The stepped platform hides storage underneath, and its first step is rounded so the climb feels easy, making full use of the vertical height. Timber wainscoting wraps the bed wall, with a black swing-arm wall lamp for reading. Beside the bed, a timber desk with a rounded end sits below white upper cabinets lit from beneath, so the sleeping area doubles as a work corner with a row of books close at hand.
Open kitchen and TV wall
The open-plan kitchen connects to the TV feature wall. Wood-grain cabinetry meets a dark stone-effect worktop and a black splashback, with concealed lighting under the wall cabinets and an open niche in the tall unit for a plant. The TV sits on a textured wall within a pale, softly backlit frame, with grey glass cabinets above for extra storage. At the entrance, a herringbone timber door closes the view, and a tall white chest of drawers defines the flow of movement.
In closing
In 216 sq ft, every piece of joinery does more than one job, and nothing is there for show. Clean lines and gentle tones present a harmonious, practical way of living in a small space.
