Bathrooms Over Time: Material Durability and Maintenance
Considerations for grout, waterproofing, fittings and cabinetry over years of bathroom use.
Bathroom quality becomes clearer after three, five or ten years. Grout, waterproofing, hardware and cabinetry deserve consideration alongside the appearance at completion.
Tiles and grout
Tiles and joints should be assessed separately. Grout selection, mixing and compaction affect cracking, moisture and mould risk. Epoxy grout also needs suitable installation and maintenance.
Waterproofing and substrates
Waterproofing lies beneath the finish but influences long-term performance. Cement-based systems and polyurethane membranes require consideration of the substrate, detailing and drying time.
Fittings and hardware
Taps, showers and rails may develop finish wear, scale or leaking cartridges. Ceramic disc cartridges, spare parts and replacement access are relevant selection criteria.
Cabinetry and counters
MDF edges, screw holes and hinge locations require attention to moisture protection. Aluminium and stainless steel should be compared for performance, touch and visual character. Natural stone and solid surfaces also have different cleaning and refinishing needs.
Glass and mirrors
Scale and mirror-edge deterioration affect maintenance. Easy-clean glass such as Pilkington Activ must be considered against product requirements and light conditions. Copper-free and water-resistant mirrors offer other options.
