An owner and his wife spent more than three weeks discussing changes to two Billy bookcases. He wanted doors and a new colour to integrate them with the living room; she preferred to retain useful furniture and avoid unnecessary expense.

Define the purpose

IKEA Billy bookcases are relatively affordable, lightweight and available in several sizes. Adaptation requires a comparison of existing condition, proposed work and replacement cost. Shared expectations matter alongside technical feasibility.

Compare adaptation and replacement

Retaining furniture can preserve a familiar layout and reduce transport and disposal. A colour or door change may be appropriate, while swollen or distorted boards require structural assessment first. Labour and fittings belong in the full budget.

Translate preferences into functions

Lower doors can reduce dust, while open upper shelves retain display space. Discussing specific uses makes different priorities easier to understand.

The final solution added doors below, retained open shelves above and limited painting to the back and door panels. It reduced work while meeting both owners’ needs.

Board condition, workmanship, fitting costs and resale value remain relevant considerations. Please contact our team to assess existing furniture and spatial requirements.
