What a Madrid Bakery Teaches Hong Kong Shops About Round Tables and Warmth

Drawing on Madrid bakery Babette's design, we look at how Hong Kong shops and homes can swap cold, glossy tile for round furniture and rustic materials to build warmth and appeal.

I recently came across the design for Babette, a bakery chain in Madrid. They are not just selling bread, they are telling a story through space. Three of the shops in the series were designed by Zooco Estudio, and I was particularly struck by the one at Paseo de la Habana 52: instead of a row of chilly glass display cases at the entrance, there is a huge round wooden table, surrounded by warm-toned ceramic tile and microcement flooring, with rough-textured cement sprayed across the ceiling. The whole place feels like walking into someone’s home kitchen, a striking contrast to Hong Kong’s mainstream go-to of bright, smooth, and stainless steel.

A Common Misconception in Hong Kong Retail and Homes

It is common to assume that “clean” means “mirror-polished,” and “professional” means “cold and detached.” Many owners ask for glossy tile throughout, seamless marble, or walls of glass, and the result is a space that looks sharp but feels a little short on warmth. Babette’s design is a reminder that rustic materials paired with warm, rounded furniture can foster far more natural interaction.

Three Practical Takeaways

Of course, every material has its physical limits: microcement needs an experienced applicator, or it cracks easily; ceramic tile grout lines need careful finishing, or they trap dirt. But it is precisely because of these trade-offs that thoughtful design stands out.
