2026 Wallpaper Trends: Materials, Installation and Maintenance

An honest look at three 2026 wallpaper trends (textured, eco-friendly, and custom digital print) and the pitfalls they run into in Hong Kong's humidity.

Every year-end brings a fresh wave of “2026 interior design trend” predictions, and wallpaper is always near the top of the list: from the hot textured styles, to digital printing, to sustainable materials, everyone seems to be chasing something new. But as a design studio that is on site day in, day out, we constantly see clients who followed the trend and ended up furious: mould, bubbling, colour mismatch, sometimes the whole thing peeling off within a month. So instead of trying to sell you on what looks nice, we want to give you an honest breakdown of what is really behind these 2026 wallpaper trends, so you can dodge the common traps.

Trend one: textured wallpaper, dimension vs. a cleaning nightmare

In 2026, faux-concrete, linen-look, and even three-dimensional geometric textures are everywhere, prized for their tactile quality and the depth they bring to a space. But in Hong Kong’s humid, dust-heavy climate, that same raised texture becomes a magnet for dust. If your home does not run a dehumidifier around the clock, or you have family members with allergies, we would suggest using it selectively (a single feature wall, say) rather than covering the whole flat.

Trend two: eco-friendly wallpaper, good in principle, but watch this

Material suppliers have been pushing “biodegradable,” “non-toxic water-based ink,” and “recycled fibre” wallpapers hard in recent years, and the pitch is genuinely appealing. The reality, though, is that these products may not match the stability of traditional PVC wallpaper, especially in Hong Kong’s high humidity, where they are more prone to expansion and contraction that causes seams to split open. Our advice is to look for brands that back their products with independent third-party test reports (tensile strength and mould resistance, for example), rather than taking the word “eco-friendly” at face value.

Trend three: custom digital print, huge freedom, but mind the colour shift

You can turn your own photos, artwork, or even AI-generated imagery into wallpaper: a genuinely personal touch. But digitally printed wallpaper commonly suffers from noticeable colour shift: the vivid tones you see on screen can print darker or more yellow than expected. These wallpapers are also typically produced as one continuous seamless roll, which means any unevenness in the wall itself (common in older Hong Kong flats) will show up as visible waves once it is hung. Skimming the wall smooth and applying a primer beforehand is essential if you want a reliable result.

At the end of the day, choosing a wallpaper is not just about following a trend. You need to think it through properly: once you have committed to a material, can you actually keep up with the day-to-day care and long-term maintenance it demands? If you are torn between wallpaper options, or want to know how a particular material would actually perform in your flat, please contact our team to discuss your design needs. We will give you a clear assessment of what is likely to work.
